Abraham Lincoln said, “People are
just as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Although most people are
confronted by the same kind of challenges in their daily life, it seems that their
response to these challenges can vary greatly. Some people tackle these
situations with a positive attitude, while others seem to be very pessimistic. These different attitudes can define our
different views of life. For some of us, a hurdle means a challenge to succeed,
but for others, it’s a dead end for their dreams. This is exactly what
differentiates a positive person from a negative person.
Positive thinking and its effect on
our wellbeing has become a very popular topic. More people are becoming
interested in learning how to think positively. But before learning how to
practice it, we need to understand exactly what the positive thinking means. Does it mean looking at the world through rose-colored
glasses? No, it does not. A positive attitude
means thinking about the drawbacks that we are confronted with as transient
external forces that we shouldn’t blame ourselves for. In other words, we never
blame ourselves for failure; instead, we always try to find an external factor
or circumstance to explain bad things that happen to us. In contrast, negative
thinking means that we always try to blame ourselves and take the responsibilities
of the bad things that we face. This
explanation very clearly sets the consequences of each approach or way of
thinking. Positive makes you try again and again without losing energy and
hope, while negative means losing your self-confidence, under estimating your
abilities and thus loosing hope.
Even though some people argue that positive
thinking can sometimes make us fool ourselves and live in denial by blaming
everything on factors that we cannot control, its benefits cannot be ignored. The
psychological and physical effects have been proven by many studies. According
to the Mayo Clinic, "Positive thinking helps with stress management and
can even improve your health." The physiology by which the optimistic
attitude can induce faster recovery after surgery or even deal better with
serious disease such as cancer or AIDS isn’t clearly understood. However, it
could be explained by the effect of stress hormones on the body’s immune
system. Many studies has found that stress management that results from
positive thinking can lead to noticeable reduction of stress hormones which in
turn has its positive effects on the body’s overall health. It seems that the
mind’s power has a great influence on the body.
The mechanism of optimism cannot be
explained by the law of attraction. We cannot just attract success or good
luck. It is not magic. Think of it as when you want something so badly. You
convince yourself that you can get what you want, but it won’t happen unless
you do your best and give all of your effort. You cannot expect things to
happen just because you want or wish them to happen. When you put sugar in a
cup of tea, you cannot expect it to become sweet unless you stir it. You need
to learn how to make lemonade out of lemon, how to make success out failure, and
how to learn from your mistake. This is what it takes to succeed, and this is
the realistic meaning of positive attitude.
Asma, This was a really interesting article. I couldn't help notice that I'm reading it on a windy, rainy, snowy day when we haven't seen the sun in quite a while. It was a perfect reminder to stay positive and look at the bright side of life. Have you always been interested in this topic? What motivated you to write this entry?
ReplyDeleteyes Kyle what a coincidence !
Deletein fact I worked with a professor in my university, I really admired his way of thinking,, he never looked at the empty half of the cup!
Asma, Interesting..... I agree with you to a certain extent. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to approach life's problems with more of a balance? I mean; I agree that it is very important to have an optimistic general view of the diverse situations we face, but on the other hand shouldn't we hold our actions and choices accountable, if only just to learn not to repete them again???
ReplyDeleteyes am totally with you,, but learning from our mistakes actually means that we look at them tpositively, our mistakes are teaching us to be better. failure makes success.
DeleteInteresting topic Asma! I had many discussions about positive and negative thinking and I enjoy reading about it. Although I find it difficult to change someone's attitude.
ReplyDeleteYes Faisal it's n't easy at all. ASK ME ABOUT IT. I am very perfectionist person and I used to blame myself for everything. it consumes me. that's why I try to adopt such a way of thinking, to overcome this stressful attitude and the good news that it works sometime :)
Deletevery interesting topic. as you wrote it has become the most popular topic, nowadays. life's pressure has a great contribute on this. just have a faith on Allah then trust yourself.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to be optimistic all the time. Anyway, interesting topic and as you said never look at the empty half of the cup.
ReplyDeleteVery touching topic especially for who live away from home. It is hard to stay happy all the time. Positive thinking could be the way for us to happiness. Keep the good work.
ReplyDeleteinteresting how the type of thinking we use affects our lives and how we think of ourselves.
ReplyDeleteInteresting topic
Thanks Asma, It is very interesting topic and has a lot of debates. It is very helpful for someone to know himself and his capabilities. Positive thinking sometimes make bad more than help because if someone is trying to be happy, his life may be affected negatively if he failed to achieve happiness; which is proven in some psychological studies.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone has a set of emotions and it is important for him to use them naturally as needed. In other word, using the right emotion in the right situation rather than limitation to certain type of thinking.
I believe that optimism gives quick results as well as pessimism, so it's up to us! I enjoyed reading your entry.. Thanks Asma
ReplyDeleteNice topic Asma, and you really motivated me to work harder.
